- HENLEAZE REAR EXTENSION -

The owners of this 1990s house wanted to replace their existing conservatory with a more generous family space—somewhere they could relax, spend time together and enjoy the garden throughout the year.

With the budget in mind, we designed a spacious but carefully proportioned rear extension that worked with the existing house rather than requiring costly structural alterations. Opening directly from the kitchen, the new room allowed us to improve kitchen storage while bringing the main social and relaxing spaces closer to the garden.

Instead of creating a wall of glass across the back of the house, the openings were carefully positioned to respond to the internal layout, frame views of the garden and capture light at different times of day. A subtly different brick colour complements the existing house without trying to create an imperfect match, while changes in the brick bond add texture and interest to the new elevation.

We explored a wide range of layout ideas with the clients, from smaller interventions to larger changes that could transform other parts of the house. This is an important part of our design process: looking beyond the initial brief helps clients see what might be possible and work out which changes will make the biggest difference them as a family. A successful project is about finding the right balance between aspiration, everyday value and build cost.
